About Newport
Newport lies near to the border with the county of Staffordshire. The 2001 census recorded 10,814 people living in the town's parish.
The town lies in the borough and unitary authority of Telford and Wrekin. The A41 runs by the town on a by-pass which opened in early 1985 and the A518 runs through the town from Stafford to Telford. The railway which once ran from Wellington to Stafford, through Newport, has now been dismantled. The canal is also now out of use. The village of Church Aston, to the south of Newport, has merged with the town, though it is a separate parish.
Harper Adams University College
Harper Adams University College is a higher education institution located in nearby Edgmond, Shropshire. In terms of the provision of courses relating to the land-based sector, it is the largest provider by student numbers in the UK and is one of only three remaining institutions of its kind in England. The institution is thus of strategic importance to the UK's land-based economy and food supply, the development and security of the rural economy, and the stability of rural communities, by virtue of its specialist graduates working in and sustaining rural enterprise.
Harper Adams was founded in 1901 and today the University College has some 2,200 students. Undergraduate courses are offered in the fields of agriculture, animal health and veterinary nursing, agricultural engineering and off-road vehicle design, estate and countryside management, tourism, agri-food marketing and business management, fresh produce management, food studies and food retail management. The University College also offers a range of masters courses (MSc and MBA) and research opportunities at PhD and post-doctoral levels. The Times Good University Guide 2005 awarded Harper Adams University College 23 out of 24 points for teaching quality.
